A pond is more than just a water feature. When ecologically balanced, it teems with life, from iridescent dragonflies dancing above the surface at night to teeming greenery along its shoreline. Yet without the proper foundation, even the most ambitious pond projects usually end up as disappointing failures.
Drawing on our years of experience in large pond construction, we at Snead’s Outdoor Services (SOS) would like to share some essential advice on building a beautiful, balanced pond:
- Slope Matters. When planning pond construction, consider the slope and layout of the site carefully. Ponds should be built on relatively flat ground with no more than a 5% grade. This allows you to maintain balanced water levels without fear of flooding or excessive draining. It’s also more practical and cost-effective compared to steep slopes.
- Shape Is Important. While ponds can be any shape, a layout with varied depths and contours creates the most natural, dynamic ecosystem. These naturalistic forms not only blend better aesthetically but also allow more flexibility working with the lay of the land.
- Save Your Topsoil. The nutrient-rich topsoil you remove during excavation is vital for nourishing plants, so stockpile it nearby. You’ll need it in the latter stages of pond construction for capping your pond’s edges and embankments to establish hardy vegetation.
- Compaction Is Key. Proper compaction takes time but is well worth the effort. You should always use heavy machinery to compact the soil, while aiming to create an impermeable base about 6 inches thick. This is key to mitigating water loss and erosion issues.
