Forestry mulching clears overgrown ground with one machine instead of a crew, a burn pile and a line of dump trucks. A mulching head on the front of the machine grinds standing brush, briars and small trees down where they are, and what comes off them is left on the ground as a layer of mulch. Here at Snead’s Outdoor Services (SOS) in Lexington, North Carolina, it is how we open up land that does not need to be stripped to bare dirt.
When mulching is the right call. Growing-up pasture and fence lines. Trails, lanes and shooting lanes through the woods. Briars and scrub taken out from under a stand of trees you want to keep. Overgrown ground around a house or an outbuilding that has gotten away from you. The machine works in and around standing timber, so you tell us what stays and we mulch selectively around it.
What you are left with. A layer of mulch across the ground instead of a pile to burn or haul. On a slope that cover holds soil in place while things grow back, and it keeps the ground walkable and workable in the meantime. Nothing leaves the property, so there is no hauling on your bill and no burn pile waiting on a dry day and a permit.
What mulching does not do. It does not take stumps out. Growth is cut off at the ground and the root systems stay where they are, so if your lot has to come down to bare dirt for a building pad, a driveway or a septic field, what you actually need is land clearing and grading. We do that work too, and when we walk your property we will tell you straight which one the job calls for — even when it is the smaller ticket.
