- Terrain. As a rule of thumb, flat or gently sloping ground is the best location for a septic installation. This is because it allows for proper drainage through the soil layers as intended. In contrast, steep slopes are generally problematic with regards to soil stability and surface runoff contamination. They may require costly system adaptations, while extremely steep grades will make the septic installation nonviable altogether.
- Accessibility. Easy access to all septic system components is needed for periodic servicing and maintenance. Buried valves, observation ports, and other access points should be easily reachable without the risk of causing damage to other elements of your property’s landscape.
- Soil Characteristics. Septic systems dispose treated wastewater into the ground through drain fields. Therefore, the soil at the septic installation site must have a high absorption rate. Additionally, there should be no impermeable layers or a high water table close to the soil surface.
- Proximity to Watersheds and Structures. Septic fields require minimum horizontal setbacks from building foundations, wells, property lines, and water bodies as defined by local codes to prevent contamination. Consequently, you’ll notice that many sections of your property are unsuitable for a septic installation, especially if you have a small lot.
